What Is a TPU Cutting Board? A Practical Buying Guide
Share
A cutting board should suit the way you cook. If you mostly chop vegetables and want something easy to lift, wash, and put away, a flexible TPU board is worth considering.
Here’s what it does well—and when another board makes more sense.
What Is TPU?
TPU stands for thermoplastic polyurethane. It combines rubber-like flexibility with toughness. Different versions are used in footwear soles, cable coverings, and automotive parts.
For a cutting board, the useful feature is simple: it bends. After chopping, you can gently bring the sides inward to guide ingredients into a bowl or pan.
Blue Ginkgo TPU cutting boards are designed and made in South Korea.
Good for Chopping, Less Suited to Sawing
Blue Ginkgo TPU boards have a slightly yielding surface that’s gentle on knife edges. They’re scratch-resistant, although knife marks can develop with use.
Use them for everyday chopping with a smooth-edged kitchen knife—think onions, peppers, and herbs.
For bread and repeated sawing motions, use a separate board. Serrated knives and cutting repeatedly along the same line can score the surface. If that’s how you prepare most of your food, a TPU board may not be your best everyday choice.
Always place the board on a flat, stable surface and check that it sits securely before cutting.
Choose a Size You Can Use and Wash Comfortably
A board needs room for your ingredients, but it also needs to fit your counter and sink.
The Blue Ginkgo three-piece set includes:
| Size | Dimensions |
|---|---|
| Small | 11.8 × 7.8 inches |
| Medium | 13.8 × 9.8 inches |
| Large | 15.7 × 11 inches |
Choose around your usual meals. A smaller board can suit a quick preparation job; a larger one gives you more room when chopping several ingredients.
You don’t need a full set just to get started. An individual medium TPU cutting board may be enough if it fits your routine.
Bend to Transfer Ingredients
Once you’ve finished chopping, lift the board and gently curve the sides to guide food into a bowl or pan.
Keep the board away from hot cookware and direct heat. Flexibility helps with transferring ingredients; it doesn’t make the board a trivet.
Handwash After Use
We recommend handwashing Blue Ginkgo TPU cutting boards. Dishwasher heat can cause warping.
Wash with warm, soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and let the board dry before storing. Give it enough space to rest without being forced into a bent position.
If you want a board you can put in the dishwasher every day, choose one whose care instructions allow that.
Keep Raw Foods Separate
Use a separate board for raw meat, poultry, and seafood from the one you use for bread, produce, and other ready-to-eat foods.
Different colors can help you remember which is which. You still need to clean the boards and utensils thoroughly after use.
Know When to Replace It
Check the surface as you wash. Replace the board if it becomes excessively worn or develops deep grooves that are difficult to clean.
Scratch-resistant doesn’t mean scratch-proof, and no cutting board lasts forever.
Is a TPU Board Right for Your Kitchen?
Choose one if you like a flexible board for everyday chopping and are happy to wash it by hand.
Keep another suitable board for bread, serrated knives, or tasks where you prefer a thick, rigid surface. You don’t need every board to do every job—just the right tools for the meals you make.
