How to Organize Craft Supplies in a Small Space

Craft supplies have a way of spreading beyond the space you give them. A few pencils become a collection of markers, glue, paper, brushes, and half-finished projects.

You don’t need a dedicated craft room to keep things manageable. A useful setup separates everyday tools, spare materials, and work in progress—so you can start a project without unpacking everything you own.

Start With One Shelf or Cupboard

Choose a regular home for your supplies before buying storage. Measure the available width, depth, and height, including clearance around cupboard doors and shelves.

If you work at the dining table, look for storage nearby. Putting things away is easier when it takes one short trip.

Keep the table available for making, and use the shelf or cupboard as the place everything returns to.

Separate Everyday Tools From Refills

Gather your supplies and sort them into three groups:

  • Everyday tools, such as pencils, scissors, brushes, and glue.

  • Refills and occasional materials, such as spare tape, extra paper, and seasonal decorations.

  • Current projects that need to stay together.

This keeps backup supplies from crowding the tools you use most. It also helps you see what you already have before buying more.

Make a Portable Kit for Your Main Activity

Keep the essentials for drawing, sewing, or paper crafts together in a storage caddy. Carry it to your work surface when needed, then return it to its shelf afterward.

Give each compartment a purpose. Separate cutting tools from adhesives, or drawing pencils from erasers and sharpeners. Leave enough room to lift items out easily.

Choose the shape around your supplies and shelf space. Our storage caddy buying guide explains the dimensions, compartments, and fit checks.

For markers, follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions. Some types should be stored horizontally between uses.

Give Small Materials Their Own Drawers

Buttons, beads, thread, and other small materials are easier to find when they aren’t mixed together in one deep container.

Divided drawers let you sort by type, size, or color. Choose whichever grouping makes sense for the way you work, then add simple labels so putting things back is straightforward.

Blue Ginkgo’s office and storage collection includes drawer cabinets with transparent drawers and adjustable dividers. Check the drawer dimensions against your materials, and measure the full cabinet against your shelf before choosing one.

Keep sharp tools and small pieces out of young children’s reach.

Give Unfinished Projects a Separate Place

An unfinished project needs somewhere to wait without becoming mixed into the general supplies.

Use a tray, folder, or suitable container to keep its parts together. Add a small note if there is something you need to remember before continuing.

Keeping work in progress separate means you can put the table back into everyday use without dismantling the project.

Store Paper Flat and Easy to Reach

Keep paper in a folder, tray, or appropriately sized box. Separate loose sheets from smaller scraps, and keep only scraps you can realistically use.

Place heavier materials below lighter ones, and avoid packing the storage so tightly that removing a sheet bends the rest.

Check paper sizes before buying an organizer. A desktop compartment that holds notebooks or stationery may not accommodate full-size craft paper.

Make Cleanup Easy to Repeat

Before finishing, return everyday tools to the caddy, small materials to their drawers, and the current project to its own container.

If one section keeps overflowing, adjust it. You may need fewer supplies in the daily kit, a larger compartment, or a separate place for refills.

Good craft storage supports the activity itself. It should make supplies easier to find, leave room to work, and help you put things away without a complicated routine.
